Stephen Loss | Handmade Tintype Portraiture

I’m a visual artist and photographer living and working in Jacksonville, Florida. I studied at Salisbury State University on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography in 2010.

My work is exploring photography as both an image-making practice in both physical and conceptual processes. Currently, my explorations involve wet-plate photography, portraiture, and studio photography with a particular interest in exploring the qualities of creating and composing photographs by hand. I’m drawn to processes that slow photography down and explore a richer relationship between the photographer, subject, and image.

If you’re curious about the tintype process, I encourage you to sit for a portrait and experience handmade photography for yourself. Each portrait is a unique, tangible object—made slowly, intentionally, and with you in mind.
